From the Preface: This book is really three small books in one, each of which can be read independently. Part I: Reflections on the Philosophy of Religion, is comprised of both serious and light-hearted reflections and accounts of various thoughts I have had on religion and mysticism over a lifetime of study and reflection on the philosophy of religion. In Part II: A Transcendental Journey, I discuss New England Transcendentalism, beginning with the Journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson. From there, I go on to parts of Emerson’s essays and the related writings of other authors on Transcendentalism and the transcendental movement. There are many detours along the way—a return to the Journals from time to time plus anecdotes, stories, and commentary. Cosmic Consciousness is the subject of Part III: Cosmic Consciousness Redux. Part III reflects my evolving thinking and commentary on Dr. Richard Maurice Bucke’s book, Cosmic Consciousness, which I first explored in an earlier book, Who Knows? About the Author Raymond M. Smullyan has had a remarkably diverse sequence of careers—magician, mathematician and philosopher, concert pianist, internationally known writer, and author of over twenty books. Now a retired distinguished professor of philosophy and mathematics, he resides in the beautiful upper region of New York’s Catskill Mountains and continues to delight audiences with performances of magic, music and readings.
